What to Expect

Players place white, black, and red DVONN pieces on an elongated hexagonal board. After placement, players move stacks of pieces across the board, with the stack size determining movement range. Moves must end on another piece or stack, and losing contact with red DVONN pieces means removal from the board. The game ends when no moves remain; the player with the highest stack wins.

Who Is This Game For?

DVONN is a two-player abstract strategy game suitable from age 9. With about 30 minutes playtime, it fits well into game nights favoring short, tactical games. It requires no prior experience but demands strategic thinking.

How It Works

The game features Grid Movement and Map Reduction mechanics. Players move stacks on a hex grid, with movement range equal to stack height. Stacks move as a whole and must land on other stacks or pieces. Loss of connection to red DVONN pieces results in removal of affected stacks. Victory goes to the player controlling the tallest stacks at the end.

Grid Movement Map Reduction

What Makes It Special

DVONN is part of the GIPF project and was designed by Kris Burm. It won the Mensa Select Award in 2002 and was recommended for Spiel des Jahres the same year. Its unique blend of abstract strategy, Grid Movement, and Map Reduction sets it apart among two-player games.
