Players move pieces on a 5x5 grid using two movement cards each, swapping cards after every move. The goal is to capture the opponent's main pawn or move your main pawn into their starting space. The game offers perfect information and a dynamic set of movement options through hand management and pattern movement mechanics.
Who Is This Game For?
Onitama is a two-player strategy game suitable for ages 10 and up. With a 20-minute playtime, it’s ideal for quick, tactical matches that require no prior experience but reward strategic thinking.
How It Works
Each player holds two movement cards showing possible moves (Pattern Movement) and chooses one to move a piece on the 5x5 Square Grid. After moving, the used card is swapped with the neutral fifth card (Hand Management). Capturing opponent pieces uses Static Capture mechanics, removing them from the board.
What Makes It Special
Designed by Shimpei Sato, Onitama won the 2016 UK Games Expo Best Abstract Game. Its unique combination of Grid Movement and Hand Management differentiates it from classic abstract games like chess.
