In Subtext, players communicate by drawing hints about a secret word. One player is the dealer who knows the word and mixes cards so one player shares the same word, but no one knows who. The dealer draws a clue aiming only for their partner to understand it. After drawing, everyone guesses who has the same word. The tension comes from balancing vague hints to avoid revealing the partner to others.

Subtext is suitable for players aged 10 and up, designed for groups of 4 to 8. It is easy to learn and perfect for casual social gatherings without complex rules. The 40-minute playtime fits well into quick party sessions.

How It Works

Each round, one player acts as the dealer who knows the secret word and shuffles it into other players' cards. One player shares the dealer's word but this is hidden. The dealer draws a clue targeting their partner. Then all players vote on who they think shares the word. Points are awarded only if dealer and partner correctly identify each other. Core mechanics include Hidden Roles, Targeted Clues, Voting, and Paper-and-Pencil interaction.
