In Herakles, each player receives two cards from their neighbors each round and must choose one to play, aiming to collect heroic deeds. You can only have two heroic deeds in play; the third causes elimination by the gods. Players can also manipulate cards in play. The game ends when only one player remains or the deck runs out. The player with the highest score is declared the new Herakles.
Who Is This Game For?
Herakles is designed for 3 to 6 players aged 10 and up. It's a quick, lightweight card game ideal for families or casual players who enjoy tactical decisions without long playtimes. No prior experience is needed, and the short rounds of about 5 minutes allow easy entry and fast play.
How It Works
Each round, players receive two cards from their neighbors and choose one to play. Cards represent heroic deeds or actions to manipulate cards. Players place heroic deeds in their play area but must avoid having more than two to prevent elimination (Player Elimination). The Set Collection aspect encourages gathering valuable deeds. Play ends when one player remains or no cards are left.
What Makes It Special
Designed by Heiko Günther and published as a microgame in 2014, Herakles combines Player Elimination and Set Collection in very short gameplay. The unusual mechanic of receiving cards from neighbors and the risk of elimination due to hubris make it stand out. While it has no major awards, its blend of interaction and quick decision-making is distinctive.
