Played on a 10x10 grid, each player controls four amazons that move like chess queens without capturing. Each turn, you move one amazon and then shoot an arrow that blocks a square permanently. The goal is to trap your opponent so they cannot move. The game blends tactical movement with spatial control and requires careful planning.
Who Is This Game For?
Amazons is suitable for players aged 12 and up who enjoy abstract strategy games. With a 30-minute playtime, it is ideal for short duels and is considered a strategy game for enthusiasts. The rules are simple but demand strategic thinking and patience.
How It Works
On your turn, move one of your amazons like a chess queen across the grid. Then, shoot an arrow by moving it like a queen from your amazon's new position onto an empty square, which permanently blocks that space. Neither amazons nor arrows can pass blocked squares. The first player unable to make a legal move loses.
What Makes It Special
Designed by Walter Zamkauskas in 1992, Amazons is a classic abstract strategy game that uses Enclosure, Grid Movement, and Tile Placement mechanics. Unlike chess, it features permanent blocking of squares, making it a member of the territorial game family and a distant relative of Go.
