You get a hand of dual-indexed cards you cannot reorder and try to outplay others with ascending or equal-value sets. Rounds end when a player empties their hand or multiple players choose to scout instead of play. Played sets can be captured when overplayed, creating score opportunities and tense, quick turns.
Who Is This Game For?
SCOUT fits families and hobby players: age 9+ makes it family-accessible, while its Hand Management and Ladder Climbing mechanics reward tactical thinking. Its ~20 minute duration makes it ideal for multiple rounds or as a quick filler. Basic familiarity with set-play card games is helpful but not required.
How It Works
Core mechanics: Hand Management and Ladder Climbing. Hands are dealt face-up but cannot be rearranged; you may rotate your entire hand to use the other side of cards. On your turn you either play an adjacent set (same value or consecutive) that beats the table set by size/type/value, or you scout: take a card from either end of the table set and insert it anywhere in your hand in any orientation. Scouting awards 1 VP to the previous setter and can be combined once per round with an immediate play.
What Makes It Special
Designed by Kei Kajino. SCOUT was nominated for the 2022 Spiel des Jahres and won awards in 2022 including Origins Awards Best Card Game and Fairplay À la carte. The dual-index cards and the ban on reordering hands create a distinct tactical twist on set-laying card games.
