What to Expect

In Rat Hot, two spice dealers compete to store their spices while keeping hungry rats at bay. Players draw and place 1x3 tiles showing spices and rats, stacking them to cover opponents' pieces and create large groups of their own spices. Each move scores points based on groups formed, but if three of your rats are visible at once, you lose immediately. The game requires careful tile placement and strategic blocking.

Who Is This Game For?

Rat Hot is an abstract strategy game for two players aged 8 and up. With about 30 minutes playtime, it suits players who enjoy quick, tactical duels. The rules are straightforward but demand strategic thinking and anticipation of the opponent's moves. Prior experience with abstract tile games is helpful but not mandatory.

How It Works

Players take turns drawing two 1x3 tiles from a face-down pile and placing them adjacent to or on top of existing tiles. Tiles show spices in player colors, rats, or empty crates. Stacking tiles covers parts of others, affecting visibility. The goal is to form connected groups of your spices for points while preventing three visible rats of your color. Points are scored immediately after placement based on group sizes.

What Makes It Special

Designed by Michael Schacht, Rat Hot is derived from his game Dschunke: Das Legespiel and uses a clever layering mechanism with partially overlapping tiles. It was nominated for the 2006 Golden Geek Best 2-Player Board Game. The blend of pattern building, take that, and layering mechanics creates a unique abstract experience for two players.
