What to Expect

You play on a massive 36x36 board with 1,296 squares and 402 pieces per player, all the same color. Pieces move by grid movement, capturing opponents by displacement and promoting automatically on their first capture if possible. Games can last very long, demanding endurance and focus.

Who Is This Game For?

Taikyoku Shogi is designed for two experienced players interested in complex abstract strategy and historic chess variants. It is an expert-level game with extremely long playtime exceeding 30 hours. Prior knowledge of Shogi or chess variants is helpful but not required.

How It Works

The game uses grid movement: players alternate moving a single piece onto an empty square or capturing an opponent's piece by displacement. Upon the first capture, a piece promotes automatically if able, changing its movement. Captured pieces are not returned to play. The goal is to defeat the opponent through strategic moves and promotions.
