Players take on the role of merchants in the Caribbean, drawing cards into a harbor area to gather ships, people, expeditions, and events. They must balance risk: drawing a duplicate ship ends their turn and discards the harbor. Cards have various effects and costs, creating tense decisions on when to stop drawing and which cards to claim. Players can also buy cards from others using coins, adding interaction.
Who Is This Game For?
Port Royal suits casual gamers and families looking for a quick, strategic card game with a pirate theme. With a playtime around 50 minutes and simple rules, it's accessible for beginners but offers tactical depth for more experienced players.
How It Works
On their turn, players draw cards one by one from the deck into the harbor and choose when to stop. Cards are people, ships, expeditions, or events with specific effects. Ships require sufficient swords from people cards to be attacked and removed. Expeditions need players to discard matching people cards. Drawing a duplicate ship name ends the turn and discards the harbor. Based on the number of ships in harbor, players may claim 1-3 cards. Other players may pay coins to claim cards from the active player.
