In Toscana, two players alternate placing tiles on a 17x17 board to create the largest connected area of roofs or plazas. Players see each other's upcoming tiles face up and can use a one-time veto to block an opponent's tile. The goal is to control the largest contiguous area by the end of the game.
Who Is This Game For?
Designed for two players aged 10 and up, Toscana is a medium-weight strategy game lasting about 60 minutes. Its simple rules make it accessible to new players, while the strategic tile placement and veto options offer depth for experienced gamers.
How It Works
Each player has a set of tiles featuring mostly roofs or plazas. The first tile must cover the board's center, and subsequent tiles must connect to previously placed tiles of the player's color. Once per game, a player can veto an opponent's tile, pushing it to the bottom of their stack. The largest connected area scores points at the end.
What Makes It Special
Designed by Niek Neuwahl, Toscana was recommended in 2001 as a Spiel der Spiele Hit für Zwei and nominated for the 2002 International Gamers Award. Its open tile view and veto mechanic distinguish it from other two-player tile placement games, set in Tuscany, Italy.
