You and your opponent each build a patchwork quilt on a personal 9x9 grid, placing polyomino patches and managing buttons as currency. The game melds Tile Placement with a time-based rondel: your time token controls turn order and income. Small 1x1 pieces and a bonus for completing a 7x7 area add scoring twists to the compact, tactical duel.
Who Is This Game For?
Patchwork is a compact two-player enthusiast-level game suitable from age 8; at about 30 minutes it fits short sessions or quick rematches. Prior experience with abstract puzzle mechanics helps but isn't required—rules are concise while strategic depth grows from placement and resource choices.
How It Works
On your turn you either buy one of the three available patches from the circle (open drafting) or pass and advance your time token. Buying costs buttons, moves the spool in the rondel and lets you place the polyomino on your square grid (grid coverage, tile placement). Passing gains buttons based on how far you move. Passing certain spaces triggers button income; time order dictates who plays next.
What Makes It Special
Designed by Uwe Rosenberg, Patchwork combines Tile Placement, Grid Coverage and a Rondel-driven time mechanic in a concise two-player package. It won the 2014 Golden Geek Best Abstract Board Game (winner) and received multiple nominations that year, underlining its standing in abstract game circles.
