Board Game Recommendations
For two players, games designed specifically for that format work best. Timeless classics include Chess and Checkers. Modern favourites are Patchwork (Tetris-style tile placement), 7 Wonders Duel (civilisation-building for exactly 2), and Jaipur (a quick trading game). For longer evenings try Pandemic: The Fall of Rome or the 2-player edition of Hive. As a rule: games with short play times and direct interaction are the most fun for two. You can filter by exactly 2 players in the Playnexi board game database.
The best family games for ages 8+ combine simple rules with enough depth for adults. Perennial favourites are Ticket to Ride (route building, 8+), Dixit (creative guessing, 8+), Codenames (word associations, 10+) and Azul (pattern laying, 8+). For shorter sessions: Sushi Go! and The Crew. The German Spiel des Jahres award picks the most accessible family game each year – a reliable guide when buying. All Spiel des Jahres winners are listed in the Playnexi database.
For adults and game nights, games with more complexity and social dynamics shine. Highly popular choices are Catan (resource management and negotiation), Wingspan (nature theme with deep gameplay), Viticulture (winery strategy) and Scythe (Eurogame in an alternate history). For social rounds without lengthy rules: Codenames, Secret Hitler or Just One. Party games like Wavelength or Mysterium suit mixed groups of 4 to 8 people. Anyone who wants to track game nights with stats and multiple rounds can use Playnexi for free.
Beginners do well with games that can be explained in under 10 minutes but still deliver fun. Recommendations: Carcassonne (tile placement, 30 min), Ticket to Ride (train routes, 60 min), Dominion (deck-building, 30 min) and Pandemic (co-op, 45 min). These four titles appear in nearly every top-10 beginner list and have high BoardGameGeek ratings. After a few sessions, stepping up to heavier Eurogames like Terraforming Mars or Spirit Island is well worth it.
In cooperative games everyone plays together against the game – ideal for groups who prefer teaming up over competing. The most popular co-ops are Pandemic (fight outbreaks – the genre classic), Spirit Island (nature spirits defending an island), Arkham Horror (Lovecraftian horror mystery), The Crew (co-operative trick-taking) and Gloomhaven (epic dungeon-crawler adventure). For newcomers, Pandemic or The Crew are great entry points – quick to explain but with plenty of depth. Cooperative games also work very well with children aged 8 and up.
The Spiel des Jahres is the most important board game award in the German-speaking world and has been awarded since 1979. Well-known winners include Catan (1995), Carcassonne (2001), Ticket to Ride (2004), Dixit (2010), Hanabi (2013), Codenames (2016), Azul (2018) and The Crew (2020, Kennerspiel). There is also the Kennerspiel des Jahres for more complex games and the Kinderspiel des Jahres for children's games. All winners and nominees can be found in the Playnexi awards database with images and game info.
Strategy games for experienced players offer deep gameplay and long play times. Among the most played are Terraforming Mars (resource management on Mars, 120 min), Brass: Birmingham (industrial Eurogame, 60–120 min), Twilight Imperium (epic space-opera strategy, 6+ hrs) and Gloomhaven (legacy-based dungeon-crawler). For tactical card games: Dominion, Netrunner and Magic: The Gathering. Anyone who wants to track win rates and stats across multiple sessions will find a practical tool in Playnexi.
For groups of 4 to 6, games that get better with more players are ideal. Top picks: Catan (3–4, expandable to 6), Codenames (4–8, teams), Dixit (3–6), Just One (3–7) and Wavelength (2–12). For longer sessions: 7 Wonders (2–7 players, simultaneous card drafting) or Bohnanza (the quirky bean-trading game from 2 players up). With 6 players, games with simultaneous turns or short waits between turns score particularly high.
Board game awards help you assess quality before buying. The most important ones: Spiel des Jahres (Germany, mass market) – the best-known award, given since 1979. Kennerspiel des Jahres – for more demanding games. Deutscher Spielepreis – voted by consumers. Golden Geek Award (BoardGameGeek) – international community. Origins Award (USA). Award-winning games typically have higher production quality, clear rules and broad appeal. All major awards are listed in the Playnexi games database.
The right board game depends on player count, experience, available time and preferences. Key questions: How many players? How experienced is the group? How much time do we have? Competitive or cooperative? As a rough guide: 30–60 minutes for casual rounds, 60–120 minutes for engaged players, 120+ minutes for enthusiasts. Trusted sources for recommendations are the Spiel des Jahres, BoardGameGeek ratings and personal tips from game groups. With Playnexi you can also analyse your group's play stats and see which games get played most.
Planning Game Nights & Statistics
Planning a successful game night takes a few preparation steps: agree on a date (Doodle or direct chat), prepare a game shortlist (2–3 options suited to the group size), organise snacks and drinks, read the rules in advance. With Playnexi you can plan game nights digitally: create an event, invite players, start a vote on the games for the evening and document results – all for free.
Playnexi is a free web app built specifically for game nights and gaming groups. You can coordinate dates, propose games for a vote, invite players and track results. Unlike general scheduling tools like Doodle, Playnexi also offers a board game collection, statistics and a game database – all in one place. The app runs in the browser – no installation required.
A digital game collection helps you keep track and choose the right game for the evening. With Playnexi you can add all your board games, attach images, ratings and notes, and bookmark wishlist titles. At a glance you can see how many games you have, which ones get played most and what's on your wish list. The game database contains thousands of titles – just search and add to your collection.
Yes, Playnexi offers full statistics tracking for board games. You can log every session with player, date, score and ranking. Playnexi automatically calculates stats: who wins most often? Which game gets played most? How is play frequency developing over time? For tournaments there is also a tournament mode with automatic bracket management. Game statistics motivate players and create healthy competition within the group.
Game voting in Playnexi works like this: the group admin suggests 2–5 games to choose from. All invited players can vote for their favourites. The game with the most votes is automatically shown as the suggestion for the evening. This saves lengthy debates and ensures everyone has a say – especially handy when not everyone is online at the same time.
Yes, Playnexi is designed specifically for regular gaming groups. You create a group once, invite your regular players and can then plan as many game nights as you like. Past evenings are preserved as a history – with all results and games played. Over time this builds up a personal game chronicle from which you can read off statistics and favourite games.
